Spring Blooms: Behind the Scenes at the Ariella Chezar and Max Gill Flower Workshop in California

This past spring, I had the pleasure of photographing a truly magical flower workshop led by two floral design icons—Ariella Chezar and Max Gill Design. Over the course of three days, talented florists from all across the U.S. gathered, creating not just beautiful arrangements but also an incredible space for connection, learning, and inspiration.

Ariella Chezar, celebrated for her natural, garden-style floral arrangements, is known for her ability to bring the wild elegance of nature to every creation. Her work has inspired many in the floral world, and her book The Flower Workshop continues to be a guide for those who want to learn the art of floral design. Ariella’s teaching style is warm, yet focused, allowing participants to explore their creativity with confidence.

Max Gill brought his signature flair for texture and movement, crafting arrangements that felt alive with the season. His Northern California-inspired work, full of rich tones and natural elements, reflected the thoughtful, foraged style that he’s become known for. I know Max for years and It was a pure joy to watch him work - not only he is the kindest person that our industry can find, but his talent and the way he work with colors and forms, makes his work easily recognizable and unique.

But what made this workshop truly unforgettable wasn't just the flowers. It was the atmosphere—three full days of creativity and kindness. Each participant brought their unique touch, but more than that, they brought a sense of camaraderie. The space was filled with warmth, and every florist was not only inspiring to me as a photographer but also kind-hearted, making the entire experience even more special.

From a photography perspective, this workshop was a dream. Capturing the flow of ideas and the spark of creativity between Ariella, Max, and the participants was an amazing experience. Each moment felt alive with possibility, and it was clear that everyone present was there to both learn and share. I documented it all on film, and every image speaks to the beauty of this collaboration.

Seeing the blooms come to life over those three days was like watching an artist paint—every detail carefully crafted yet full of spontaneity. The results were breathtaking, and I’m thrilled to share a glimpse of this inspiring workshop through my lens.
